How to find promises in your text messages on a Mac, 3 ways.

To find a promise in your texts on a Mac, search Messages for the phrase and the person, or use Textlore, whose Promises page lists every promise you made and whose search finds the ones other people made with from:Name.

Updated 22 October 2026. For Messages on macOS 26 and later. Not legal advice.

Short answer

To find a promise in your texts on a Mac, search Messages for the phrase and the person, or use Textlore, whose Promises page lists every promise you made and whose search finds the ones other people made with from:Name.

TL;DR

  • Promises you made: Textlore's Promises page lists them all, with the day you said it, how many days late it is and the message.
  • Promises someone else made: in Textlore search from:Jordan "I promise". In Messages, search the phrase and scroll to the person.
  • Phrases to try: I promise, I will, I'll pay, I'll send, by Friday, next week.
  • If it may matter legally, export the chat with dates as PDF and keep the original. Ask a lawyer what counts.

3 ways at a glance

OptionBest forCatch
Messages searchA promise you remember a word of, in recent chats. Free.No date filter. You read every result yourself.
Terminal (sqlite3)Free search of every message on your Mac.Technical. Many recent messages come back blank.
TextloreEvery promise you made, plus search for other people's by sender, phrase and date.Paid after 14 days. Mac only. Promises needs Apple Intelligence and lists your promises, not other people's.

1. Search the Messages app

  1. Open Messages and click the search field at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Type a phrase, such as I promise or I'll pay, and press Return.
  3. Click a result. The conversation opens at that message, with the messages around it.

Messages has no date filter, and common phrases bring back long lists. Check that Keep messages is set to Forever and that Messages in iCloud has finished syncing, or old texts will be missing. See how to search old iMessages on a Mac.

2. Search the database in Terminal

Messages keeps your history in a database file that macOS's sqlite3 tool can search. It is free, but you type commands, it shows numbers instead of names, and on recent macOS many messages store their text in a coded column, so some results come back blank. The steps are in our guide to searching old iMessages.

3. Let Textlore list them

Textlore is a Mac app that reads your Messages and WhatsApp for Mac history. Recs lists what friends told you to try, with their exact words, and Promises lists what you said you'd do for people, both found by Apple's on-device model on Macs with Apple Intelligence. It also searches every year as you type, keeps its own archive of messages and photos, and exports to 6 formats with phone numbers and emails hidden by default. It never sends, edits or deletes a message, and nothing leaves your Mac.

Promises you made

Open Promises with ⌘6. It lists every time you said you would do something for someone, with the day you said it and how many days late it is. Promises past their day come first. Click one to read the message. Use I kept this, Remind me or Open in Messages. When a later message suggests you kept it, Textlore tells you so you can check it off.

Promises someone else made

Promises shows what you promised. To find another person's, press ⌘F and search:

  • from:Jordan "I promise" for Jordan's exact words.
  • from:Jordan "I'll pay" after:2025 for a date range.
  • from:Jordan "by friday" -cancel to leave out messages that say cancel.

Export the chat with dates as a PDF with ⇧⌘E. See how to print text messages for court.

What Textlore doesn't do

  • It is Mac only, and needs macOS 26 or later.
  • It reads the Messages history on your Mac, so your iPhone texts need Messages in iCloud switched on to get there.
  • It reads Messages (iMessage, SMS and the other texts in it) and WhatsApp for Mac. It can't read an iPhone backup.
  • Recs, Promises and Ask AI need a Mac with Apple Intelligence.
