  • Press ⌥Space in Textlore to search from any app, the same way you press ⌘Space for Spotlight.

Where Spotlight is the better pick

  • It searches everything. One shortcut finds an app, a file, an email or a message.
  • It is free and already there. Nothing to install.
  • It does more than search. Apple's page also lists calculations, unit conversions, clipboard history and Quick Actions.

If Messages results do not show, open System Settings and check Spotlight's search results.

Where Textlore is the better pick

Textlore is a Mac app that reads your Messages and WhatsApp for Mac history. Recs lists what friends told you to try, with their exact words, and Promises lists what you said you'd do for people, both found by Apple's on-device model on Macs with Apple Intelligence. It also searches every year as you type, keeps its own archive of messages and photos, and exports to 6 formats with phone numbers and emails hidden by default. It never sends, edits or deletes a message, and nothing leaves your Mac.

Recs in Textlore: 25 things friends told you to try, with Severance recommended by 3 people, each in their own words.Recs in Textlore: 25 things friends told you to try, with Severance recommended by 3 people, each in their own words. Dark appearance.
  • Recs. Spotlight will not tell you that 3 friends told you to watch Severance. Recs does, with each person's words.
  • Promises. It lists every time you said you would do something, with how late it is.
  • Narrow it down. Combine words, for example from:Theo has:link recipe.
  • Export. Send a result and the messages around it to PDF, with a live preview.

What Textlore doesn't do

  • It is Mac only, and needs macOS 26 or later.
  • It reads the Messages history on your Mac, so your iPhone texts need Messages in iCloud switched on to get there.
  • It reads Messages (iMessage, SMS and the other texts in it) and WhatsApp for Mac. It can't read an iPhone backup.
  • Recs, Promises and Ask AI need a Mac with Apple Intelligence.

Questions

Can Spotlight search iMessages?

Apple's Spotlight page lists messages among the things it finds. It does not describe date or sender filters for them.

Is Textlore a Spotlight replacement?

No. Spotlight searches your whole Mac. Textlore searches only your iMessage and WhatsApp for Mac history, and adds Recs, Promises, filters and export.

What is the shortcut for Textlore quick search?

Press Option-Space in any app. A small search bar floats over your work. You can change the shortcut in Settings.

Does Textlore need Full Disk Access?

Yes. macOS keeps your Messages history in a protected folder, and Full Disk Access lets Textlore read it. Textlore never sends, edits or deletes a message.

Can I try Textlore before I pay?

Yes. Every feature is free for 14 days, with no account, no email and no card. After that it is a one-time purchase for 2 Macs. See the pricing page.
