Where Messages search is the better pick
- It costs nothing and needs no setup. There is no app to install and no Full Disk Access to grant.
- It finds text inside photos. A word on a screenshot or a sign can turn up the picture. Textlore does not do this.
- You can reply. Textlore never sends, edits or deletes a message.
- It is enough for recent chats. Type a word, press Return and click the result.
Where Textlore is the better pick
Textlore is a Mac app that reads your Messages and WhatsApp for Mac history. Recs lists what friends told you to try, with their exact words, and Promises lists what you said you'd do for people, both found by Apple's on-device model on Macs with Apple Intelligence. It also searches every year as you type, keeps its own archive of messages and photos, and exports to 6 formats with phone numbers and emails hidden by default. It never sends, edits or deletes a message, and nothing leaves your Mac.

- Recs and Promises. The 2 lists Messages cannot make. Recs shows who recommended each thing, when, and their exact words. Promises shows how many days late each one is.
- Search with filters. Messages has no date filter. In Textlore,
during:summer 2024,from:Jordanandhas:file leasework as you type. - An archive. With Messages in iCloud on, macOS removes older local photos when space runs low. Textlore keeps its copy.
- Search from any app. Press ⌥Space and a small bar floats over your work.

What Textlore doesn't do
- It is Mac only, and needs macOS 26 or later.
- It reads the Messages history on your Mac, so your iPhone texts need Messages in iCloud switched on to get there.
- It reads Messages (iMessage, SMS and the other texts in it) and WhatsApp for Mac. It can't read an iPhone backup.
- Recs, Promises and Ask AI need a Mac with Apple Intelligence.
