The best Decipher TextMessage alternative, for a Mac.

Short answer

The best Decipher TextMessage alternative is Textlore when your texts are on your Mac, and iMazing or imessage-exporter when they are only in an iPhone backup.

TL;DR

• Decipher TextMessage costs $29.99 once, exports PDF, CSV, TXT and HTML, and runs on Mac and Windows.
• Textlore reads the Messages history on your Mac, not a backup. It adds Recs (what friends told you to try) and Promises (what you said you would do), plus search, an archive and WhatsApp for Mac.
• Textlore costs $20 until 28 October, then $39$39 once, for 2 Macs, with 14 days free.
• Stay with Decipher for iPhone backups, Windows or a Mac older than macOS 26.

Why people look for a Decipher TextMessage alternative

• They want more than a printout. Decipher saves and prints messages. It does not list what friends recommended or what you promised.
• They use WhatsApp. Decipher's product page sends WhatsApp users to a separate app, Decipher Chat. Textlore reads WhatsApp for Mac next to iMessage, and Recs, Promises, search and export cover both.
• They already have the texts on a Mac. With Messages in iCloud on, a backup step is extra work.

Textlore: what you get instead

Textlore is a Mac app that reads your Messages and WhatsApp for Mac history. Recs lists what friends told you to try, with their exact words, and Promises lists what you said you'd do for people, both found by Apple's on-device model on Macs with Apple Intelligence. It also searches every year as you type, keeps its own archive of messages and photos, and exports to 6 formats with phone numbers and emails hidden by default. It never sends, edits or deletes a message, and nothing leaves your Mac.

• Promises. The things you said you would do, sorted by how late they are, with the message where you said it.
• Recs. What friends told you to watch, read, eat and install, in their words.
• An archive. Textlore keeps its own copy of every message and photo while it is on your Mac, so they stay after Messages clears space.
• Search. Results narrow as you type, with from:, before: and has:photo filters.

What Textlore doesn't do

• It is Mac only, and needs macOS 26 or later.
• It reads the Messages history on your Mac, so your iPhone texts need Messages in iCloud switched on to get there.
• It reads Messages (iMessage, SMS and the other texts in it) and WhatsApp for Mac. It can't read an iPhone backup.
• Recs, Promises and Ask AI need a Mac with Apple Intelligence.

When Decipher TextMessage is the better pick

• Your texts are only in an iPhone or iPad backup.
• You use Windows 7 or later, or a Mac that cannot run macOS 26. Decipher's page lists macOS 10.12 and later.
• You mainly want a printout of one conversation.
• You want to check whether deleted messages are still in a backup. Its free trial shows this.
